Mark Alexander Smith
Mark Alexander Smith is one of the founding partners of Smith Thompson Law LLP. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2005 and carries on a diverse and exciting general litigation practice with a focus on personal injury, employment law, medical/dental malpractice, construction and insurance litigation.
Mark is very active in the legal community, a member of the Edmonton Bar Association and contributes regularly as a speaker and presenter for the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association where he has been a board member since 2015 representing the Judicial District of Edmonton.
Mark is married and a proud father. When he is not up to his ears in alligators at the office, he enjoys time with his family and friends, fly-fishing and sipping bourbon.
Brian E. Thompson
Brian E. Thompson is one of the founding partners of Smith Thompson Law LLP. He was admitted to the Alberta bar in 2005 and the British Columbia Bar in 2013.
Brian was a partner at a well-established boutique insurance defence firm in Edmonton before leaving to help establish Smith Thompson Law LLP. Brian’s long history of representing many of Canada’s large insurance companies provides him with unique insight into the complexities of insurance litigation which in turn has been a great asset in representing clients in prosecuting their personal injury claims. Brian also carries on a general litigation practice focused on civil disputes.
Brian also provides solicitor services in real estate transactions for individuals, developers, and business owners.
When not practicing law, Brian can be found spending time with his young family or lacing up his running shoes. On occasion, he may also be found sipping bourbon with Mark.
J. Faye Garries
Faye Garries obtained her law degree in 2009. She articled at a large national law firm, primarily practicing in personal injury. From 2010 to 2018, she practiced insurance defence litigation for a large insurance defence law firm. She has extensive experience in professional liability disputes and has defended lawyers, pharmacists, residential and commercial realtors, home inspectors, engineers, contractors and other professionals including directors and officers. Faye has experience in defending night clubs and bars for over serving their customers who are then involved in severe motor vehicle accidents, often resulting in fatalities or traumatic brain injuries. She has also defended night club security personnel for assaults against clientele resulting in serious personal injury. As a result of this experience, she is well positioned to bring lawsuits against professionals, realtors and establishments serving alcohol as she has experience on both sides. She also has experience interpreting and proving coverage opinions on insurance policies for medical travel insurance, home insurance, automobile insurance, and commercial general liability insurance. Faye’s background and experience with insurance companies gives her clients a distinct advantage when dealing with virtually any lawsuit.
On a personal level, Faye enjoys spending time with her husband, two young daughters and her Goldendoodle, Sam. She enjoys cooking, attending book club and reformer pilates classes. She highly values family relationships and is close with her parents, brothers and extended family members.
